How important do you think natural selection is to Evolution change?

The idea that the natural selection is a major component of evolution is a foundation of Evolution theory. How important do you think natural selection is to Evolution change?

  1. Selection drives evolution. It is fundamental.
  2. Although evolution relies on multiple mechanisms, the two most major, important mechanisms are natural selection and genetic drift, natural selection being the primary reason organisms change over time. As someone said above me, natural selection is the driving force of evolution. Without it, species would not exhibit significant changes within a population. Without natural selection, there would be no evolution like we know it to be.
  3. Evolutionary theory has several components - natural selection, genetic drift, genetic flow. Natural selection is important because the mechanism that can adapt a population to its environment. In our everyday understanding, it's the most important mechanism, because it leads to a positive change, rather a random change.

  5. Natural selection is the answer to the classical watchmaker question that creationists like to ask. Natural selection promotes the survival of the fittest individuals in each generation and their successful reproduction. Though even if we didn't have NS, we would still have other mechanisms by which evolution could occur (like drift), NS is a mechanism for promoting favourable adaptations and gene combinations.
