What is the best way to relocate without too much turmoil?

I know this is an absurdly open question... but what is the best way to relocate to a new place in terms of financial preparation, social networking, and emotional preparation. Does anyone have any tips for making smooth transtiions before the relocation occurs to avoid less turmoil?

  1. Whenever I've relocated I had a friend that was already established at the location. They found an apt and all that. I just sent my share of the expenses ahead of time. So when I got there I was already set up and just had to find a job.
  2. Try to visit your new location for a week or so before you move to set up bank accounts (unless you have your bank there), map out your area, etc. It's going to be an uprooting no matter what, but if you don't have friends there, see if friends have friends there, etc. that would be willing to at least meet you and introduce you around. Best bet (if you are a total stranger)? Check out your houses of worship, get involved in some community things (get the local paper), do your regular routine (I do Barnes and Noble and coffee and breakfast) every weekend) once you get in. Good luck to you!
